What to Expect at an Audition
Auditionees at both our Musical Theatre and Acting courses will begin their day with a tour of the college and a short talk from the Directors, which parents are also welcome to attend.
The Foundation Course in Acting -
Students auditioning for our Foundation Course in Acting will have three stages to their audition. Firstly, you will be asked to perform two contrasting pre-prepared speeches of your own choice, one classical and one contemporary, from published plays
(maximum 2 mins per speech). It is useful to choose something that you think is within your casting bracket - in other words a role that you might reasonably be abe to play.
You will then take part in a group workshop, led by one of our resident tutors, to see how you respond to the group and to look at your improvisational and sight-reading skills.
At this point you may then be recalled by the panel to take part in a group singing workshop. Most actors at some point in their career need to be able to sing which is why we include an element of singing on the Foundation Course in Acting at Read College. At the audition stage we are looking for willingness and 'trainability' rather than experience, so if you are a less confident singer please do not worry.
At the end of this process you may then be recalled to interview with the audition panel so that we can get to know you a little more as an individual, and to give you time to ask any questions.

The Foundation Course in Musical Theatre -
Students auditioning for our Foundation Course in Musical Theatre will be expected to have experience in at least two of the disciplines of Musical Theatre (acting, singing and dancing) and show us at audition that they are 'trainable' in their weaker subject. For example, many students who audition for us are experienced dancers with little acting training, or experienced singers with little dance experience, etc. At Foundation Course level we are looking for students who will learn quickly and work hard, but who may not yet be fully rounded as Musical Theatre performers.
All students will begin their audition by taking part in a Ballet class and a Jazz class. Please ensure you have with you the correct clothing and footwear for both classes. You will then take part in a group Acting workshop so that we can see how you work with other people and look at your improvisational and sight-reading skills.
Finally, you will be asked to sing a pre-prepared Musical Theatre song of your choice to show us your voice and range (please bring sheet music in the correct key - no backing tracks).
At this point you may then be recalled to sing a second song of your choice in a contrasting style - again from a musical and with appropriate sheet music -and also to perform a contemporary monologue of your choice. This should be from a published play or musical and should be appropriate to your age range (maximum 2 mins).
At the end of this process you may be recalled to interview with the audition panel so that we can get to know you a little more as an individual, and to give you time to ask any questions. |
